Wan Qingli, a respected teacher, scholar and art connoisseur, is best known for his "work of the brush": Paintings and Calligraphy.He was a student of the great artists Li Keran and Lu Yanshao in China.He studied under Dr. Chu-tsing Lee and received his Ph.D. from Kansas University.He is now a professor of Chinese Art at Hong Kong University.

Wan Qingli's first one man show was also held at E&J Frankel, Ltd., back in 1985.Now he has come full circle.His latest works, as Edith Frankel puts it in her foreword to the exhibition catalog, "have blossomes from a mind and soul in preparation for a lifetime to be able to express the message of Chinese painting."This message incorporates Chinese poetry, quotations and mythology, expressing them in 21st century terms.An example is the quote from Mao Zedong (Mao Tse-tung), used in a painting depicting two porcupines: 'If you do not attack me, I will not attack you."Wan Qingli understands the dilemma of many upwardly mobile Chinese caught in the vice of East becoming West.This is clearly expressed in his statement that "the audience is gone while the music is still playing."
